WordPress 3.1 for Christmas?

Posted on Dec 17, 2010

The day was fast and full of information. Talks were divided into three groups to make sure everybody gets the most out of their day at their own WordPress level. Along with us WordPress geeks were an interestingly fair amount of android-powered smartphones over the iphones (hurrah!). But that’s not the most important incident of the day of course. (Forgive me for noticing the gadgets.) The real highlight to me was the news shared with us by WordPress Core Developer Andrew Nacin that 3.1 might be served on the online publishing platter before Christmas.

Much Ado About Shakespeare

Posted on Apr 24, 2010

Yesterday was Shakespeare’s birthday, regarded to be the greatest writer of the English language. Shakespeare is so imbedded into our veins that I know no one who is literate in the English language who does not know at least one quote or line from him. Can’t think of anything? How about, “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears” from his play ‘Julius Ceasar’? Or try, “To be or not to be, that is the question” from his work ‘Hamlet’?

Why maintain a blog?

Posted on Jan 3, 2010

After writing on the internet for more than three years now (had to check my archives to be sure), I am still hesitant to call my website a weblog. I shy away from being called a blogger. As a former journalist, I don’t find it very professional to be called a blogger. I don’t even know where the word “blog” came from. I don’t call my posts “posts”, I call them “articles”.

New year’s resolutions, anyone?

Posted on Jan 2, 2010

Since a new year has begun, new year’s resolutions are just around the corner. The truth is, and I’m quoting this from my bestfriend, “I’m not big on new year’s resolutions”. I think that if we want to resolve or change something, we can do that any day of the year. But it does make it easier to chart when we do it the first day of the year. Just imagine, if you decide to quit smoking and start on January 1 and people ask you how long you have stopped smoking on say, June 1, it’s easy to say that you have stopped for five months already. So that might be the logic behind new year’s resolutions?

We just moved!

Posted on Feb 23, 2009

If you used to read my blog and/or portfolio, you would clearly see that we just moved. We have a new address (http://www.charedverschuur.com) and a new platform — wordpress. I maintained a blog and portfolio for quite a while with blogger. But I always had issues with it because of the limited publishing capabilities. I always felt not quite at home. Many times, I even felt ashamed that I have a blogspot address. It did not feel like it’s really mine — my website. It may sound territorial but that’s just how it felt like. But then, I just wanted to write about...

Blogging, writing, or blogwriting?

Posted on Feb 18, 2009

“A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” I don’t write as much now as I did before. I would like to blame it on the fact that I don’t have a job where I should be writing regularly. When you’re a reporter, a writer or a columnist, it is your job to write. You have to produce a report, a write-up or a written opinion everyday. Some may call it forced inspiration, but when you stay in the media circle, you also have the required materials to be inspired to write. Admittedly, I don’t read as much news now as I did before too. We watch the morning...

Telecommuting, something for me?

Posted on Feb 13, 2009

I’ve just found a new subject to research about: telecommuting. Or in simple words — working from home, working where you want to. Since I moved in the Netherlands, I have been looking for opportunities to work as a journalist, or as a writer, researcher, proofreader and editor. With the many facets of journalism — writing, researching and editing are my favorites. Call me obsessive-compulsive but it is actually a job for an OC. You can’t miss a period, a comma or an apostrophe. Whenever I analyze myself and why I like editing, there’s a part of me that usually...

What makes one a writer?

Posted on Aug 21, 2008

The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart. – Maya Angelou I would not call myself a born writer. When I had the chance to look back at old diaries, I even laughed at my grammar. Writing is something I learned and practiced through the years. I always kept journals since I was young. I remember writing long essays at school, making my own book reports (I really read the books!) and producing really lengthy written projects. I actually feel guilty when I am not able to write about what I see, what I learned, my...
